This program has been slightly modified to include and address the issue of whether shame is a topic that coaches can or should address in a coach setting and when to refer a client to a therapist or counselor.
We recognize the fact that there are topics, emotions, and situations that push us to the edge of what is ethical or right to pursue as a coach. It is important to know what we can do in the moments when clients get triggered or deeply emotional. To gloss over it would be a disservice to our client. Knowing how to recognize it, stay with our client and address it in the moment is the goal of this program.
*****
Shame is the most painful human emotion. It impacts interpersonal bridges, sense of self-worth, and other emotions, making it more challenging for a client to exercise their emotional intelligence. As coaches we want to be able to "Demonstrate confidence in working with strong emotions and self-manage and not be overpowered."
Shame can come up with clients in all niches of coaching - from Executive, to Wellness, to Career Coaching and more.
In this session, you will learn:
- What shame is and typical signs that shame is impacting a client’s behavior and beliefs.
- Common identifiable sources of shame.
- How to work with shame as a coach.
- When to refer your client to another professional (ICF handout provided).
You will discover how to:
- Recognize the presence of shame, and tips for creating coach-client agreements to explore the shame together.
- Understand grounding techniques and their importance in supporting clients to be able to address shame without being overcome by emotion.
- Use powerful questions to help unveil sources of shame and gain clarity about its impact.
- Use coaching techniques, such as helping clients re-frame or shift perspective, to support them in becoming free of shame and taking responsibility for their lives.
You will hear a case study of how the presenter supported her client in understanding how shame was operating in her life, and the remarkable impact the client experienced when she gained clarity about what part of the story she was responsible for (healthy humility) and what part actually was others’ responsibility, freeing herself from the shame that had been weighing her down.
In this interactive session we will focus on concepts to understand shame better and cover techniques that clearly live in the purview of coaching and a coach's ability to stay present and serve their client: skills like awareness, normalizing, championing, exploring strengths and resilience, re-framing, shifting perspective, big-picture meta-view, and offering grounding techniques that allow the client (and the coach) to stay present.
