Working with the right coach can make all the difference in your ability to succeed in reaching your goals. Because a decision to retain a coach can be a significant investment of time and money, it is important for you to find the right coach with the right experience and training to work with you.
How to look for a coach
1. Carefully consider the criteria that you both want and need in your coach.
2. Interview several coaches. You want to make sure that you share good rapport and that the coach will work with you in the way that will work best for you.
3. Know what a coach can and cannot do. Coaching is not therapy or counseling.
What kinds of coaches are there?
Coaches generally fall into two categories:
Professional / Career / Business Coaching – Business coaches work with organizations through their owners, human resource departments or directly with leaders and executives providing leadership development, team building, support with business strategy, communication or employee or leadership assessments. May work one-on-one with people in career transition.
Personal / Life Coaching – Personal or life coaches work one-on-one or in groups with individuals who desire coaching on personal areas such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD / ADHD), children, creativity, finances, getting organized, health & fitness, life planning, relationships, retirement planning, spirituality, etc.
