President's Message from Lori Candela

Lori Candela | Published on 1/10/2023

Hello fellow coaches,

Happy New Year! I hope your 2023 is off to a great start. I have been spending some time really thinking about what my goals are for this year. So, I decided to WOOP my life!

I learned about the WOOP method of goal setting a couple of years ago when I took a course with Dr. Laurie Santos, a Professor of Psychology at Yale. So many of us are familiar with setting SMART or GROW goals. The WOOP model was created by Gabriele Oettingen, a Professor of Psychology at New York University, and the University of Hamburg. WOOP is a “science-based mental strategy, based on 20 years of scientific research, that people can use to find and fulfill their wishes, set preferences, and change their habits.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”  With WOOP we start with a wish and end up with a plan. The acronym stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. So here is an example of one WOOP that I committed to:

My WOOP Summary

My Wish: Increase ICF-CT Chapter member engagement on social media
My best Outcome: More members will respond to and share posts
My inner Obstacle: I don’t have time and I am not sure what to say or do
My Plan: If “I don’t have time and I am not sure what to say or do,” then I will “Commit 10 minutes to commenting on and/or sharing posts every Tuesday after I read the chapter newsletter and reach out to Stephanie Tishler, our Marketing Chair if I need help.”

If you would like to WOOP it up in 2023, click here to visit WOOPMyLife.org to learn more and get free resources. (Note: I am not affiliated with this organization in any way, I just really like their videos, tools and app and thought I would share this resource with you.)

Our chapter is off to a great start this year with several exciting events coming soon:

A Northeast Regional Program: Emotional Alignment in Teams, Presented by Dan Newby, PCC
Professional Enrichment Group: Maintaining Best Practices in Coaching
Virtual Coach Café
Virtual Chapter Meeting and Program that you won’t want to miss – Credentialing with Angie Holleran, ICF Global

Go to https://icf-ct.org/, Event Calendar to find out more and to register.

One last thing: have you thought about getting more involved with our chapter by joining one of our committees? Perhaps you want to, but aren’t sure how much time you can contribute? Do you want to share your talents or learn something new? We always welcome members on the following committees: Membership, Marketing, Programs and in-person Meeting Management. We are also looking for members who want to be involved in planning our chapter’s International Coaching Week 2023, as that committee is forming now.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please reach out to me at president@icf-ct.org and I will be happy to set up a time for us to talk.

I wish you much success this year, good health, peace, joy, and happiness!
